Burns Night 2023

The Society held it’s annual Burns Night celebration at our Hall on 26 January.
Many of the guests who attended were experiencing their first Burns Night.
We were delighted to have Janette Martindill, the President of the South Dorset Caledonian Society and Aubrey Lane, a Past President of the Bournemouth Cornish Association with us for the evening.

Hattie Miles talk

On 12th January, Hattie Miles gave a most interesting and fascinating talk on ‘James Bond’ and the many links to Bournemouth and Dorset.  The inclement weather may have been a factor in the lower than expected attendance. Those of us present had a thoroughly enjoyable morning.

Our current Rules that inform how we make decisions

A Special General Meeting took place on Thursday 29 September 2022. The purpose of the meeting was to propose that a new set of Rules for the further running of the Society be adopted. Copies of the proposed new Rules had been sent to all Members some months ago.

Most of the amendments from the present Rules were minor however an important alteration to the existing Rules related to the change in the Membership qualification requirements.

In order for there to be a valid vote according to the current Rules there needed to be a quorum. The effect of Clauses 3 and 4 of the Rules provided that a quorum shall be “36 paid up members or 75% of that number if less.” At the meeting 15 members were present at the start with 4 Proxy Votes.

On 29th September 2022, Fully paid up members totalled 31. The 75% Rule then needed to be invoked which meant that a Resolution could only be passed if 22 Members were voting or proxy voting. There were therefore insufficient Members to pass any votes at all at this Special Meeting and consequently the current Rules of the Society would continue.

Society Member Martin Axton asked if an informal vote could be taken on the original proposal despite the fact that it would not be binding. Martin’s proposal was seconded by Morag Judd and the majority of the Members present agreed. The original proposal, that we adopt the new Society Rules, was put forward to the Members. On a show of hands, 11 members present indicated they would support the change of rules, out of the 15 members present. It was proposed and agreed that the Rule changes will be formally voted on at the Society’s Annual General Meeting in May 2023

Gathering of the Clans – 2022

On the night of the Gathering of the Clans, 8th September, and as our Council members and others were preparing the Hall for the ‘Gathering of the Clans’, the news of the death of The Queen filtered through. Several members, who were intending to come to the ceilidh, sent word that they felt it would be disrespectful to attend or that they just couldn’t join us.
The President promptly held a brief Council meeting where it was agreed to postpone the event. Those who did make the journey stayed a wee while for a cuppa …and moments of recollection, reflection and conversation. The new date for the Gathering of the Clans has now been decided by the Council and will be on Thursday, 20th October. This will replace the Autumn Dance originally planned for that date.
